About GO


Global Oregon is a university-wide strategic initiative to enhance internationalization in the student experience, in research, and in our outreach to the state and the world. Like all strategic initiatives, it blurs the boundaries among teaching, research, and community service. It establishes new synergies among all three to develop new modes of learning, and new ways for the university to fund itself and give back to the community. Global Oregon is deliberately cross-regional and interdisciplinary, drawing together UO expertise on every world region and from many academic domains to address truly global challenges and to internationalize the student experience, and by extension, the state.

Global Oregon’s many activities cluster under three priorities:

1. GO GLOBAL WITH UO’s GREEN BRAND: Around the world, if people know Oregon, they know our wondrous natural environment and our leadership in sustainable development. Global Oregon leverages and expands this reputation, packaging our world-class research, teaching, and outreach in sustainability in ways that attract overseas partners and generate new revenue streams.

2. GO GLOBAL IN THE STUDENT EXPERIENCE: The hallmark of a UO education can be multilingualism, firsthand international experience, and cross-cultural savvy for diverse work environments. We pursue a number of projects to internationalize the entire student experience:

3. GO GLOBAL IN THE STATE: In 50 years, Oregon can be the place in the US to look for a multilingual, globally savvy workforce. How? Given the state’s small, concentrated population, we can have a big impact through a deep & sustained partnership with Oregon businesses, communities and K12 schools to expand language learning, area studies, and international exchange. This is an especially meaningful way to “pay back” the state for its decades of investment in our institution.
